The Burrell Collection: Treasures Great and Small
Speaker: Dr Maureen Park
Wednesday 1 November 2023, 10.30-11.40
Orchardhill Parish Church, Church Rd, Giffnock, Glasgow, G46 6JR
In March 2022 the Burrell Collection reopened to the public following a 5-year closure and a £38m transformation. And this year it won the prestigious Art Fund Museum of The Year Award. Sir William and Lady Constance Burrell's remarkable gift to Glasgow of almost 9,000 works of art, dazzles visitors with its wonderful treasures. With so much more on display than ever before, how do we know what to look out for as we wander round? This illustrated talk will provide a brief introduction to Sir William and his collection before we examine in detail a small selection of its highlights - including paintings, sculpture, stonework, carpets, tapestries and stained glass from around the world - dating from ancient times to the 20th century.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. This talk is FREE. However, There will also be an opportunity for donations (suggested minimun £10) to the British Heart Foundation on the day.
For those of you not familiar with Orchardhill Parish Church, turn off Fenwick Road at Church Road and go up to the crest of the hill. The church is on the right-hand side. Directly across from it is a small car park and there is another larger car park just below the small one which can be accessed by turning left down Rosslea Drive and turning immediately first right. There is also some local street parking available. Map and directions
