Art Treasures of Tate Britain

Title:  Art Treasures of Tate Britain

Speaker:  Dr Maureen Park

Date:  Wednesday 4 June 2025, 10.30 am

Venue:  Orchardhill Parish Church, Church Rd, Giffnock, Glasgow, G46 6JR

In 1894, Sir Henry Tate gifted to the Nation 65 paintings and £80,000 for a gallery to be built to house his collection of British Art and for the collection to be expanded in the future. Today the Tate Collection has more than 2,300 paintings and is housed in 4 different public galleries. This talk will highlight the remarkable art collection at Tate Britain, the original site for the gallery at Millbank, London. We will explore the wide range of its collection and focus upon some of its most-loved masterpieces.  These will include paintings by Hogarth, Blake, Constable, the Pre-Raphaelites, Spencer, Moore and Hockney. We will also explore the Clore Gallery extension which houses the wonderful collection of the JMW Turner Bequest, gifted by the artist.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided both before and after the talk. The talk is FREE. There will be an opportunity to make donations on the day to Prostate Cancer UK.

For those of you who are not familiar with Orchardhill Parish Church in Giffnock, turn off Fenwick Road onto Church Road at a set of traffic lights. Driving up the hill, the church is on your right hand side. Directly across from it is a small car park and there is a slightly larger car park which can be accessed by turning left, down Rosslea Drive and turning immediately first right. There is also some local street parking. Please arrive in plenty of time to find a nearby parking space.
