First World War Memorial Plaque

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

ORCHARDHILL  FALLEN ( WWI )

Orchardhill Record January 1922 Page 1

“... Our Congregational Memorial to the men of our Congregation who gave their lives in the Great War was unveiled in the Spring of last year.  We renew our sympathy with those to whom that bronze tablet brings back great grief and precious memories.

It would be a real crown to all that self-sacrifice if, for the sake of that self-sacrifice, our people made up their minds to give unflagging support to every cause that seeks the peace of the world, and the uplifting of humanity.  ...”

The WW1 plaque is inscribed as follows:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF THIS CONGRGATION WHO SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 OF WHOM THOSE NAMED BELOW HAVE PASSED FROM THE SIGHT OF OUR EYES BUT WILL NEVER LOSE THE LOVE OF OUR HEARTS.

CWGC WORLD WAR ONE ENTRIES:

These are the CWGC Entries for the WWI names listed on the memorial. Unfortunately as the memorial only gives the name of the casualty with no additional details there is some ambiguity. Some I have listed as probable or possible as they seem very likely to be correct. Hopefully with more research these points will be confirmed.
